IN ANCIENT cultures, more enlightened modern societies, and in the animal kingdom, birth is not the traumatic experience it can be in contemporary Western countries.
This is the assessment of naturopath Emma Sutherland who specialises in hypnobirthing.
"Hypnobirthin g is a method of preparing the body for the best possible birth outcome,'' Ms Sutherland said.
She is quick to dispel any suggestion of the practice as some form of quackery.
"When you understand that pain is activated by fear you are in a much better
position to deal with it,'' she said. "Hypnobirthing is a deep state of relaxation that helps release endorphins; women work with their birthing body more effectively. It results in a shorter second stage of birth.''
Ms Sutherland said her hypnobirth courses taught participants self-hypnosis and deep relaxation techniques.
"Women can use these techniques long after they've given birth, they're universal methods that keep you calm and centred.''
Ms Sutherland also works with patients in the therapeutic areas of infertility, miscarriage prevention and IVF support. She has pioneered a detox program that is proving effective in alleviating infertility and miscarriage.
The hypnobirth courses for mothers-to-be and their support are held in a group setting, privately in a series of three-hour sessions, or over two weekends.
Emma Sutherland works at various Sydney clinics, including Southside Health and
Wellbeing at Hurstville; 9579 2480.
