Services resume on Illawarra line with lengthy delays

09 Feb, 2012 04:44 PM
Trains on the Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line are operating slowly again in both directions after a derailment at Hurstville.

But CityRail said there were delays of up to 50 minutes to services on the Illawarra and South Coast lines.

Passengers are advised to listen to station announcements and check indicators before boarding.

Passengers turned to twitter to vent their frustration about the delay.

A man on his way to Wollongong wrote that passengers were presented with few alternatives but to wait.

‘‘We have been asked to stay at this platform for an unspecified amount of time... If you have alternate transport, you should leave the train." are you freaking serious???’’ he said.

Passengers travelling between Central and Bondi Junction are able to use their tickets to catch Sydney Buses services instead.

An Ambulance Service of NSW spokesman said earlier it was a minor incident at Penshurst about 4.45pm with a south-bound train which had left Hurstville and was heading towards Cronulla.

''The first couple of wheels were off the line,’’ he said.

‘‘No carriages tipped over.

‘‘They’re just taking passengers off now.’’

Buses were called in to get rail travellers to their destinations as soon as possible.

Police asked drivers to take other trains past the affected site which resulted in delays.

See the CityRail Service Interruptions site or phone 131 500 for more updates.

I was on a train leaving late from Oatley. We stopped at Mortdale for a while then Penshurst. For once the guard was very informative and we were given bottles of water while waiting to board the train at Oatley. As we were creeping along at Penshurst The guard said "Passengers, we will be passing the derailed train shortly on your left. When you can all wave to the idiot responsible!" Lol!!

Get lost Mark, you don't know what you're talking about! These things have been happening SINCE 1955! In 1983 ALONE there were THREE derailments! IN ONE YEAR! Not to mention a derailment every second year since then! It is Rail Corp! Rail Corp is a problematic & farcical entity & heads need to roll! Weve gotta clean out the deadwood! Period!

Dennis, dear--do consult a history book. Derailments have been happening since the beginning of rail travel in every country. And golly-gosh! trains are still the safest form of transport apart from aircraft, and perfect for efficiently moving thousands of people every rush hour.

Dennis, the Illawarra line has many incidents of fatal accident, one in the 1920s at Hurstville claimed 5 lives. Fortunately the fail safe system worked yesterday.

I agree with your comment about Mark. You can't blame the Premier when an accident is averted. The system worked and I noticed the Rail Staff, especially the Station Manager, doing his job to the best of their ability. Well done to all those who did their job properly.

@ Misty, give me a break will you! At least give me credit that Rail Corp (the whole show) is a farce long overdue for a revamp!

I myself "absolutely adore" the railways but we have to admit, the Railways Dept.of NSW is a joke. Sydneysiders have had enough.

I am a big rail & train buff. But I have to admit, there's something wrong with Rail Corp (management) & for waaaaaay too long. All in it to 'feather their nests'

If anybody wants to see what a great rail system looks like, go over to PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA. Theyre blitzing us.
