Showdown for candidates

04 Nov, 2009 02:37 PM
THE man who almost unseated Macarthur MP Pat Farmer at the last federal election said he was looking forward to ``finishing off the job'' in 2011.

Labor's Nick Bleasdale, a carpenter from Macquarie Links who achieved the biggest swing in the state in 2007, is the front-runner to contest the seat again.

But last week, Werriwa MP Chris Hayes was asked to run for it.

Mr Bleasdale said: ``At this stage I will be seeking the preselection for Macarthur.

``I'm ready. I have been ready since 2007. I'm full of energy and I am committed to finishing off what I started. I came so close.''

Macarthur, held by the Liberal Party since 1996, was almost won by Mr Bleasdale who attracted 44 per cent of the primary vote against Mr Farmer's 47per cent.

If he succeeds in winning preselection for the seat again, Mr Bleasdale will compete against the Liberal Party's Russell Matheson, the former mayor of Campbelltown, who beat Mr Farmer for party endorsement last week.

Mr Bleasdale said: ``It would be a tough battle in the most marginal seat in the country.''

On a possible preselection threat from Mr Hayes, he said: ``Chris is a great leader. He was the one the got me to run (for Macarthur in 2007) and I believe he should remain the federal member for Werriwa.''

Mr Hayes said that he been sounded out about running for the seat of Macarthur but that he was only interested in his seat of Werriwa.

``I would not run for preselection in any other seat but Werriwa,''

he said.

``I am a genuine representative of my federal seat and I am very humbled by all the support I have been offered from the community.

``I would like to continue in my current role in the electorate where I have lived for the past 30 years with my wife and family. All I want to do now is to stay focused in serving the people of Werriwa.''

Mr Farmer currently holds Macarthur with a margin of 0.7 per cent.

Proposed changes to the electorate's boundaries would likely make it a Labor seat with a margin of 0.1per cent.
