Skate park back on the agenda at council

02 Jun, 2008 11:32 AM
Sutherland Shire Council's Community Services Committee will discuss the Wanda skate park proposal tonight at a special committee meeting at 6.30pm.

There will also be presentations from residents and skaters.

Residents' spokeswoman Marilyn Urch said a skating facility was a good idea but the current open-plan concept was flawed.

"We'd rather see something like the Monster skate park at Homebush,'' she said.

"Even the skaters say they don't want a fixed design like at Menai and Engadine.

"A supervised facility like Homebush would be much better than an unsupervised site like Wanda that's more than 2km from a train station.''

A staff report to the committee said the council had two options.

"It can choose from the three options considered in this report... or it can abandon the proposal to provide a skate park in the eastern area of the shire,'' the report said.

The three sites under consideration are all within the Wanda area and were supported as preferred options by the council last year after more than a decade of discussions.

This new skatepark needs to be near the station as the buses dont let the kids on with their bikes!

More than 70 per cent of skatepark users are bmx riders. Sutherland itself is the BEST choice. Forget Wanda they don't want it.Sutherland NEEDS it!

Does anyone know why there is heavy digging equipment up at Wanda Reserve digging a massive hole? I thought the Skate Park was still 'up in the air'?

Someone's mum obviously doesn't go to many skate parks. Your stats may be right for Engadine but that's because it is not a design conducive to skating. It is better suited to BMXers. Skaters prefer to go elsewhere. Go to nearly any other skate park and skaters rule. Sutherland has Menai just minutes away and is not in the Eastern part of the Shire, so it is out of the question. The only people that don't want a park in Wanda is a few NIMBYs. Bikes on buses? Why do you need to take them on the bus? Ride to the park. That's what they were invented for.
