Speedy schools - need for extra flash signs

3/06/2008 4:00:00 AM
ALMOST 90 motorists have been caught speeding outside Sutherland Shire schools this term.

During the four weeks from April 28 to May 27, police issued 86 infringement notices for speeding offences in school zones.

Among those fined was a Wollongong man caught riding his motorcycle at 102 kmh in a 40 kmh zone outside Caringbah High School.

The 34-year-old was travelling along Taren Point Road on May 13 when he was stopped at 9.07am.

He was fined $397 for not having a licence and a further $1750 for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 kmh. The offence carries an automatic loss of licence for six months.

Sutherland highway patrol is responsible for enforcing speed limits outside the 70-plus schools in Sutherland Shire.

Senior Sergeant Michael Simpson, who heads the unit, said highway patrol officers in Sutherland local area command were assigned to police a school zone every day.

Those on busy, multi-lane roads - such as at Miranda North Public School - were given most attention because they were considered high-risk.

"We encourage voluntary compliance with the speed limits by using a highly visible approach ... to encourage drivers to comply with school speed limits,'' he said.

"This system has worked well at some of the high-risk schools [and] if you drive down The Boulevarde during school zone hours you will see the vast majority of drivers brake, and abide by the 40 kmh speed limit.

"I think the message gets through in those sorts of locations.''

Senior Sergeant Simpson said many of those caught speeding claimed to be unaware they were in a school zone.

He said there was a real case for raising awareness of speed limits by installing more flashing lights on signs leading to school zones.

The Leader reported late last year that flashing lights would be installed at 400 more school zones in NSW over four years using revenue from fixed speed cameras.

As part of a trial, flashing lights had previously been installed at 100 schools, 18 of which were in St George and Sutherland Shire.

I'm all for drivers being fined for speeding in school zones. If a driver claims to have not seen the sign stating the bloody obvious- 40KM - from 2.30pm to 4pm they either need to get their eyes checked, or walk to and from school..We have a daughter in the local school, and I ALWAYS drop her off and pick her up where I can park legally. Yet there are parents and P-plate drivers who are hell bent on speeding thru school zones especially in the afternoon. I've seen this numerous times, and the drivers dont give a damn. Their attitude seems to be "oh well, school zone I wont get caught..haha". I'm also more than thoroughly pissed off with parents picking up children in the afternoon who blatantly ignore "No Stopping" signs, block driveways, park in bus bays etc...I do the right thing when waiting for our daughter to come out of school. Who told these people that it's all well and fine to completely ignore speed limits and parking restrictions. I sure as hell didn't. Did you?
