THE Leader has been inundated with tales of deformed citrus fruits since it ran a story on a Rockdale resident's odd-shaped lemon.
St George and Sutherland Shire residents have sent in photos and bagloads of funny looking lemons since the July 1 article.
The wacky fruits are all the result of bud mites, which feed on citrus flowers, buds and fruitlets, causing deformities.
Menai resident Louis Trantalis, who brought in a bag of grostequely-shaped lemons, said he thought it was because he was using too much fertiliser on his tree.
Barden Ridge resident Vanessa Skinner said her tree, which normally produced plenty of fruit, had only one lonely, deformed lemon on it perhaps the rest were scared away.
``It is still on the tree growing,'' Ms Skinner said.
Jim and Lesley Stephens of Engadine sent in a double-headed orange suggesting that the bud mite liked a change of diet occasionally.
``It was picked off a 25-year-old Washington navel,'' Mr Stephens said.
Mite infestations occur between September and February. They can be controlled by oil sprays, which reduce their ability to feed and lay eggs.
Have you seen any weird lemons?
