CAR racing may not be a typical classroom activity but an event held at Sutherland this month had a broader purpose.
Students from years 8 to 11 from several Sutherland Shire high schools met last week at Sutherland Basketball Stadium for the "F1 in Schools Regional Final".
The event was part of an annual competition which invites students to use their imaginations to build mini-racing cars powered by CO2 gas.
The project was developed by the Re-Engineering Australia Foundation, which encourages youth to consider a career in the engineering, design or manufacturing industries.
Schools that were involved included Cronulla High, The Jannali High, Engadine High and Lucas Heights Community School.
The fastest car award went to the "Venom Racing" team from Lucas Heights; team "Limitless" from Menai won the development prize; "Blue Lightening" from Jannali won the professional prize and the wildcard winner was "Rapid Racing" from Engadine.
Winners will attend the NSW final in November.
