THREE Sydney friends who love motorbikes will hit the road on an outback odyssey to raise awareness of male depression.
Andrew Blanda of Bexley, Robbie James of Brighton-Le-Sands and Raz Chorev of Dover Heights will leave Sydney on September 5 on a 3000-kilometre journey to Bathurst, Hay and Broken Hill, then through South Australia and to the Northern Territory.
The journey is a project they have launched called Riding4acause.
"We are hoping to hold talks in the various communities we pass through on the stigma of male depression,'' Andrew Blanda said.
"Male depression is not only a big problem in the cities but is also a major problem in rural and remote communities. There is still a stigma about male depression and people feel they can't talk about it.''
The friends met on Twitter. They found although they found it comfortable to talk about male depression, many in the community did not.
"Between us, we have got seven sons and we want to make sure they will feel comfortable about speaking about male depression when they grow up,'' Andrew said.
Once they reach the Northern Territory the trio will join up with the with Black Dog Ride, a national project to raise awareness of depression in all sectors of the community.
Hundreds of motorcyclists will complete the last 130 kilometres of the journey from Alice Springs to Glen Helen Resort in the MacDonnell Ranges on September 11.
Overall, the journey should take two weeks.
