Vegan lifestyle is cruelty-free

07 Dec, 2011 09:00 AM
THE Vegan Society of NSW has celebrated 30 years of spreading the word of compassion towards animals and educating people about veganism.

Vegans shun meat, eggs, dairy products and all other animal-derived ingredients as well as animal derived products such as leather and wool.

Cara Davis of Sylvania became a vegan after living a vegetarian lifestyle for four years.

"For me, it was about knowing that nothing I eat, wear or consume involves animal suffering," she said.

"I enjoyed being vegetarian but felt a bit hypocritical sometimes as a lot of suffering and harm takes place in the dairy industry.

"It is really easy [for people] to become disconnected from food choices today.

"They purchase milk and turn a blind eye to where it came from but if they really thought about where their food came from they would be more understanding of veganism."

The health implications of not consuming animal products also appealed.

"A lot of people think vegans have no energy or are unfit," Ms Davis said.

"I run ultra-marathons and last year did the 87-kilometre Comrades Marathon in South Africa.

"As a vegan, I can get all of the protein, vitamins and nutrients I need to be able to run for 10 hours.

"I think that's a testament to how healthy a vegan diet can be."

Ms Davis said some people were understanding of her choice but others were dismissive.

"Most people understand vegetarianism but with veganism, some people find it difficult to grasp why you wouldn't eat eggs and milk," she said.

Ms Davis joined the Vegan Society six months ago.

What do you think are the benefits of veganism?

Watched a tv show a week ago about animal products in things you wouldn't expect it to be in, like soap, shampoo and all hard-back books. And glue for shoes. It impossible to avoid. But at least we can try.

You can't guarantee cruelty free. What about fertilisers and animal extrement that is used to grow the vegetables. Can we guarantee that? Or that animals were used in transporting said vegetables. I do however congratulate those who do make the effort.

Veganism is an excellent solution to many of the world's environment problems. Animal agriculture is a disaster for the environment. It involves a most inefficient use of natural resources and creates water pollution, soil erosion, and greenhouse gasses.

The climate changing effect of the animals raised for food in Australia is greater than all the coal-fired power stations put together. If you're worried about climate change, eating a vegan diet is the best way to make a real difference.

Excellent article! As a vegan I found that I became healthier and more conscious of my diet. There are many benefits to a vegan diet. Most importantly, I feel that the environmental advantage with a vegan diet is a huge plus.

Great article! I have been vegan since childhood and I would recommend it to anyone. I eat delicious food, have never had B12, calcium or iron below the normal range and I don't have to feel guilty about contributing to unnecessary animal cruelty.

The American Dietetic Association says that, with adequate nutritional research, a vegan diet is suitable for all age groups.

I love being a vegan. I now have been doing this for over 25 years and i feel better than ever. I have had some medical issues but i treat that with herbal medicine. Pharmaceuticals are tested on animals so not an option as a vegan. I love animals more now and everyone plus believe me i am not hippy. I live in a city and feel i am contributing to the world environmentally as well by not eating or contributing to the suffering on animals. I do know what is in all the products so i feel i can successfully avoid animal ingredients. The information is out there so there is no excuse these days

what a great article! I went vegan this year after six years as a vego. Talk about having the proverbial wool pulled over our eyes - once you discover the truth about eggs and milk it's an easy choice to make. Veganism is one of the best choices I have ever made, my diet is delicious, the people I have met are wonderful and I feel so much more in tune with the world around me. None of us can make perfect choices, but we can all realistically reduce the suffering we cause to animals
