BOOKWORMS are often regarded as a refined folk.
So you would not expect them to battle it out for pole position to enter the annual Lifeline Sutherland Bookfair.
But up to 300 people are expected to queue to get inside Sutherland Entertainment Centre this Saturday morning, the start of the two-day event.
This year's sought-after book is expected to be a first edition copy of the 1949 The Pisan Cantos by Ezra Pound, of which there is only one other known copy in Australia.
Bookfair co-ordinator Geoff Gardner refused to say how much they would be asking but it would be significantly less than copies for sale online.
Another sought after bargain is expected to be a 1733 original French copy of An Explanation of the Book of Psalms.
Although one of a series of three books, a book dealer could be expected to pay hundreds of dollars online for a copy but you could pick it up for just $50 at the bookfair.
Mr Gardner said there were several signed books for sale, including copies of Peter Carey's His Illegal Self.
He said the fair had grown significantly in its eight-year history and about 150per cent in the past four years.
``Most books will average about $5 or $6,'' Mr Gardner said. ``Children's books are always a big seller for us, but history, military and political books are the most popular and usually pretty quick to go.''
Last year, 60,000 books went on sale and the event raised $106,000 for the organisation.
There will be records, DVDs and tapes for sale.
