Young singer grows his hair for charity

06 Mar, 2010 03:58 PM
STARTING in 2002 when he was nine, Dylan Wright, has been spending most of his spare time rasing money for charity.

As a singer, you will find him busking in Gymea at weekends and, thanks to winning a school talent quest worth $100 plus a recording contract, he now has four tracks available for downloading on the internet at $1.50 each.

To Dylan, every cent helps. He has calculated that the $100 first prize in the Portfest 09 competition held at his school and sponsored by Quarterpipe Records of Gymea has taken his total earnings to $10,000.

Originally, all the money raised was going to the MS Society because his mum, Anne Dennis, has MS. Now he spreads his earnings among other charities including Sutherland Shire Disability Association, McGrath Foundation, Prostate Cancer Foundation, Australian Red Cross, Surf Life Savers Australia, and Australian Indigenous Education Foundation. Dylan, now 16 and in year 11 at Port Hacking High School, is growing his hair for charity.

``It is now about 13 centimetres,'' he said.

Derek Turner from Quarterpipe Records is enthusiastic over Dylan's future in music.

``Dylan is a supremely talented young man,'' Turner said. ``His songwriting style is classic, his guitar playing is effortless.''

Turner, who produced the four tracks by Dylan now on the internet said all four recordings were ``nailed on the first take''.

``Dylan possesses a voice that is truly first class.'' Turner said. ``You won't believe this vocal delivery is coming from a teenager.''
