Call goes out for superheroes

10 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
CRONULLA Plaza will resemble a Hollywood film set on Sunday when residents attempt to break the Guinness world record for the largest single gathering of people dressed as superheroes.

Day of Heroes is a Rotary Club of Miranda initiative to raise money for the Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation and is sponsored by the Leader.

The foundation is the principal fund-raising body for the hospital at Randwick and is dedicated to working with the community to improve the quality of life for generations of seriously ill children.

It provides funding for medical equipment, life-saving services and medical research.

Rotary Club president Daniel Mann, 49, of Kurnell, said more than 1580 registered participants were needed to break the existing record set in Los Angeles on October 2 at a Paramount Studios event promoting the Dreamworks movie Megamind starring Brad Pitt and Will Ferrell.

To be eligible, participants must be dressed as a "recognised superhero" — one that has appeared in a published book, comic, television show or film. Each person's costume must be instantly recognisable as the superhero they are portraying. Suggestions include Batman, Astro Boy and Wonderwoman.

Mr Mann said participants were required to be in the plaza at around noon to prepare for official counting by a Guinness World Records representative at 1pm.

He encouraged people to register online before the start of the event to ease any congestion.

There will be plenty of entertainment on the day including carnival rides and food stalls. Sutherland Shire's principal radio station, 2SSR, will be broadcasting live.

2SSR representatives will also be leading a group in another challenge, performing the Nutbush, in a line dance, with all superhero participants.

Registration is $5 for each superhero or $15 for groups of four.

The event will be held from 10am to 3pm.

Sponsors include Caltex Australia, Sutherland Shire Council, Cronulla Beach CBD, Knock Out Pest Control by Steve Cope, Northies Cronulla Hotel, athegame.com.au, IMB, Jester Fancy Dress, Caringbah, Payne Pacific Real Estate, St George Graphics & Printers Australia, Kingsgrove and trybooking.com.

Brings back beautiful memories of 1984, still my favourite year to date. I grew up on Wonder Woman, Cagney & Lacey & Spiderman.
