Melham backs PM in leadership ballot, McClelland supports Rudd

23 Feb, 2012 10:24 AM
Banks MP Daryl Melham will support Prime Minister Julia Gillard in the leadership ballot which will be held at 10am on Monday.

‘‘In my 22 years in Parliament I have always supported the leader of the Labor Party, and I will continue to do so,’’ he said.

Mr Melham intended to vote for Kevin Rudd when he was dumped by the party in favour of Ms Gillard, but it did not come to a vote.

As chairman of the ALP caucus, it was his job to convene Monday’s meeting after the Prime Minister announced the formal ballot.

Former federal attorney general and Barton MP Robert McClelland said last night that he had talks with Kevin Rudd yesterday and indicated he would encourage his challenge for the leadership.

He said Rudd was the best person equipped to win an election.

"He was the first person to win in opposition for 17 years and he has public support,’’ Mr McClelland said."

In response to recent criticism of Kevin Rudd's style, Mr McClelland said there ‘‘was no doubt he was a hard worker ... and a stickler for detail on policy, but I think that led to better policy outcomes."

The Labor leadership battle follows Kevin Rudd resigning last night from his post as Foreign Affairs Minister, saying he had lost the confidence of Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Ms Gillard announced a formal leadership ballot will now take place at 10am on Monday.

What do you think about the ballot? Would you support Gillard or Rudd?

I support Julia Gillard. She has shown a great deal of courage in the face of Kevin Rudd's relentless destabilisation campaign which he is now bringing to a head.

Kev's having a bigger dummy spit than Abbott over the 2010 election.

Neither Gillard, Rudd or Abbott have the credentials to lead this country out of the quagmire they and their predecessors have put it in. The economy is not doing well despite what some may claim. We have a huge underemployed class of people in casual part time jobs. We have high and unsustainable levels of immigration. Our investment in infrastructure is abominable. I don't vote because I think the parliament is part of the problem. I'd like to see it set aside for a decade or so and a group of wise men and women take charge to start rebuilding this country.

Take the opportunity and install the real PM, Bob Brown or Slipper or Oakshot or Windsor or the cleaner who would do a sterlig job or let's not forget the drover's dog, no offence to the drover's dog.

The caucus opinion seems to be out of touch with the people they are elected by and who they are meant to serve.

Nearly 70% of the voting public want Rudd. Nearly 70% of the Caucus are sticking with Gillard.

What does that tell you? Same as when they replaced Rudd with Gillard. Absolute hubris - arrogance and a complete disregard for voters. Goodbye Labor

if the ALP wishes to have any chance of keeping office then Gillard must go. the public DO NOT want her.

Well, if Daryl Melham will vote for Julia Gillard then I won't vote for Labor anymore. People no longer trust her so maybe we can give Abbott a go.

It's not about voting for Julia or Tony, or Kevin or Malcolm (watch Malcolm make moves before the next election), but it's about policy reform and its implementation, and the real policy choices on offer between the ALP and the Coalition. Good on you Daryl Melham for supporting the current leader, as in doing this you are not only confirming your loyalty and commitment to democratic process, but also supporting the leadership team of a government of truly capable people delivering real change, and invest in Australia's future, despite the destructive chatter undermining and sabotaging this.

Daryl Melham has been one of the most lazy MP's in Canberra. Prior to the 2010 election Daryl had only presented 2 speeches. It appears Daryl is too busy with Revesby Workers Club. Melham is a lazy campaigner only turns up on the day and you guessed it the people in the electorate still vote for him as the seat is now sitting on 2 percent. For a change of government you need to change your local mp.
