St Lawrence on track for Commonwealth

14 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
ST GEORGE distance runner Ben St Lawrence is on track to represent at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

He was the first Australian home in the 5000-metres race at the Melbourne Track Classic last week and he posted his first Commonwealth Games A-qualifier (13 minutes 26.91 seconds) in being pipped out of third place. The race was won by Britain's Andy Baddeley (13:20.85), ahead of Kenya's Jonathan Komen (13:25.46) and New Zealander Adrian Blincoe (13:26.10), just ahead of St Lawrence and well ahead of national 10,000m record-holder Collis Birmingham (13:33.44).

Shire athlete Bridey Delaney enjoyed a comfortable win in the women's 1500 metres. She ran 4 minutes 14.52 seconds, outside the qualifying standard and 1.25sec ahead of Canberra's Lisa Corrigan and well ahead of third-placegetter, Victorian Kaila McKnight.

In the women's 5000 metres, Sutherland's Commonwealth Games representative Eloise Wellings finished fourth (15min 42.58sec) behind Ireland's Mary Cullen (15min 27.75sec) with Lara Tamsett from NSW a second behind.

Wellings, who has qualified for the 10,000m, tried to make the running for a fast time and admitted her early pace made her "pay for it'' in the latter stages.

The Melbourne Track Classic brought the 2010 Australian Athletics Tour to a close, with attention now focussed on the Australian Athletics Championships and Commonwealth Games selection trials in Perth from April 16-18.
