Good start in opening day clashes

19 Nov, 2009 03:22 PM
BOTH Sutherland and St George are in strong positions after day one of their two-day clashes.

Sutherland travelled to face Campbelltown-Camden with the home side batting first.

Campbelltown-Camden started slowly and were 2/27 early in their innings thanks to two early wickets to fast bowler Adam Fleming.

Three strong middle-order partnerships of 64, 116 and 50 between John McKell (43), James Phathanak (119) and Cameron Nupier (65) had the home side at 5/257.

Sutherland bounced back through Joel Tuccia and Louis Talay to see Campbelltown-Camden lose their final six wickets for just 38 runs to post 295.

Wickets were shared for Sutherland with Tuccia claiming three and Talay, Fleming and Dudman two each.

In reply, Sutherland's opening duo of skipper Matthew Hughston (15) and youngster Nic Maddison (45) were both not out at stumps with the score on 62.

Maddison's 45 was off just 24 balls and included six fours and a six.

St George hosted Sydney at Hurstville Oval.

The defending premiers batted first and posted a respectable 9/324 at stumps.

The home side were unable to capitalise on a strong 84-runs opening stand between Mark Stoneman (55) and Steve Cazzuliono (48).

Most batsman contributed to the total with Stewart McCabe (61), Philip Wells (36) and Trent Copeland (29) helping push the total past 300.

NSW duo Moises Henriques and Josh Hazlewood are expected to boost St George's bowling stocks when day-two play resumes on Saturday.

Sutherland's NSW player Phil Jaques is unlikely to play for his club side while Steven Smith is an outside chance of joining Sutherland's batting line-up on Saturday.

Sutherland's David Murphy hit a spectacular 215 runs off 148 balls in a second-grade match at Glenn McGrath Oval. On his way to a double century, Murphy eclipsed teammate Phil Jaques' second-grade record of 208 runs in 1997/98. His knock was also the highest score ever at Glenn McGrath Oval, beating Matthew Bradley's 212 not out in 1999/2000. It was also the second highest score for Sutherland, behind Jaques' 312 against North Sydney in 2006-07.

Second grade: Sutherland 5/433 dec (David Murphy 215, Scott Pickering 121, Joel Brockley 54) vs Campbelltown-Camden 2/70.

St George 186 (Matthew Turner 92) vs Sydney 0/70.

Third grade: Sutherland 267 (Hayden Watson 56, Josh Zywietz 41, Sam Newman 37, Jasem Rafique 35) vs Campbelltown-Camden 0/10.

Sydney 149 (Michael Radnidge 4/49) vs St George 0/56.

Fourth grade: Sutherland 226 (Mathew Earley 60, Nick Hogan 37, Grant Johnson 31) vs Campbelltown-Camden 2/6 (James Bills 2-3).

St George 7/289 (Matthew Baden 154 not out) vs Sydney.

Fifth grade: Sutherland 98 vs Campbelltown-Camden 6/92 (Scott Dawes 4-15).

Sydney 116 (Aaron Royall 5/22) vs St George 3/60.
