SUTHERLAND bowlers rescued their team late in the day against Manly-Warringah at Glenn McGrath Oval on Saturday.
After grabbing the early breakthroughs to have the visitors 3-29, Manly fought back, chiefly through Justin Cox (128), to gain ascendancy.
When he was dismissed at 4-228, Manly looked likely to pile on the runs in a hot afternoon's play.
Instead, Sutherland bowlers headed by Nathan Fitzgerald (4-61) and medium-pacer Jason Holley (3-33) dismissed the last six batsmen for 81 runs.
Fast bowler Joel Tuccia (2-78) and Andre Adams (1-41) were the other wicket takers, as Sutherland chase 309 this Saturday.
SUTHERLAND representatives Phil Jaques and Steve Smith, who took part in the Cricket NSW launch of the 2009/10 Season at Blacktown Olympic Park last week, excelled for NSW on the weekend.
Jaques made the most of his recall to the NSW team, hitting a fast 50 (51 balls) in his side's Ford Ranger Cup one-day win over Western Australia at North Sydney Oval on Sunday.
Steven Smith hit 29 from 30 balls as NSW passed WA's total of 179.
Smith took 2-64 off nine overs, while Cronulla quick Stuart Clark bowled an economical eight-over spell for just 15 runs.
