DEANNE Murphy took a lie-detector test and ate tuna up to six times a day before winning the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation exercise figure world title in New York recently.
Murphy's win follows her fifth place in the competition in 2007 and runner-up last year.
To ensure Murphy and her competitors are all drug-free, the federation has a strict banned substance list and regularly drug test competitors. A lie detector is used to see if athletes are taking banned substances.
Murphy, of Sans Souci, has been body sculpturing for the past five years after originally stepping on to the catwalk as a model.
"I wanted to test myself a bit more,'' Murphy, 27, said of her switch. "I was always into athletics so I thought I would put two and two together.''
The full-time IT account manager trains six times a week for 90 minutes, incorporating a cardiovascular program in the morning and weights in the afternoon.
In the lead-up to competition she will stick to a strict diet, basically of tuna meals, including breakfast.
"It's pretty tough but I make sure that I keep up with all my supplements, food and vitamins,'' Murphy said. "I would train three times a day leading up to competitions.
"I want to get out and help girls get to where I've got. I want to motivate women to get into the gym.''
