Dragons add attack option to brick wall

Dragons add attack option to brick wall

09 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THE test of playing expansive football but keeping their brick wall defence intact looms as the biggest challenge to St George Illawarra coach Steve Price this season.

Take it as read that the Dragons will shed part of their perceived ‘‘boring’’ brand of football in favour of a riskier, cutting edge and attacking version.

Skipper Ben Hornby said the biggest change in the handover from Wayne Bennett to Price could be described in one word — attack.

‘‘There hasn’t been a great deal of change,’’ Hornby said.

‘‘We’ve done a little more in attack.’’

Being able to sustain a defence-oriented game for 24 regular season matches is almost unbearable.

Although it worked during the breakthrough premiership in 2010 the Dragons tired last year under the strain of a representative period which placed a heavy burden on a game plan which was about grinding their opposition into submission.

Very few games were won easily.

This year it is likely there will be a bigger gulf in the Dragons’ winning and losing margins — a result of attacking football.

When asked if they would play an expansive game, Hornby said: ‘‘A little bit more. Our game will still be based on defence.’’

Part of the revolutionised attack includes Kyle Stanley slotting into fullback. Stanley will play the bulk of the 80 minutes in the trial game against North Queensland in Perth on Saturday night with Price excited by what the Hurstville United junior brings from the back.

‘‘He will get a fair amount of game time,’’ Price said. ‘‘He has been doing well in the pre-season. We expect big things from Kyle.’’

Kyle’s older brother Chase’s slow recovery from a knee injury has left the right-centre position wide open with Beau Scott and Nick Emmett mentioned by Price as front-runners.

Price was hopeful but not confident that Chase Stanley would recover in time to play in the Charity Shield against South Sydney on February 18.

Price said Nick Emmett and Beau Scott would get the chance to partner Matt Cooper in the centres.

Como-Jannali outside back Nathan Green will also have a chance to show his worth on Saturday night.

Despite being named in the squad, skipper Hornby (thigh strain) won’t play, with Nathan Fien expected to start at halfback. Cameron King and Mitch Rein will share the dummy-half role.

*NRL contracted players Daniel Vidot, David Gower and Jack Stockwell will play for the newly named Illawarra Cutters in a NSW Cup trial against Mounties in Wollongong on Saturday night.

Do you expect the Dragons to use the ball a bit more this season?
