Dragons dangerous in left-hand attacks

16 Sep, 2009 04:00 AM
SHUT down St George Illawarra's left-hand side attack and opposition teams will go a long way to beating the minor premiers.

Statistics obtained by the Leader has shown that the Dragons heavily attack the right hand edges of their opposition.

In the 63 games played by left-hand side trio of Brett Morris, Matt Cooper and Ben Creagh they have scored 34 tries.

In comparison predominantly right-fringe players Wendell Sailor, Matt Prior and Beau Scott have crossed just 17 times in the one more game.

Ben Hornby has worked the left channel with great success this season.

The Dragons have several variations in their pet plays with Hornby hitting Ben Creagh short off the hip.

Other times the Dragons skipper or five-eighth Jamie Soward will shift a little wider and use Creagh as a decoy and link with fullback Darius Boyd to try and create an extra man play.

Boyd will hope to attract the interest of the opposition centre or winger and hit an unmarked Morris on the flank.

The third variation - which has come into use more frequently in recent weeks - has been either the double cut out pass or the single cut out pass to a flying Morris.

Some wingers such as Eric Grothe and Hazem El Masri have a tendency to rush up on the opposition, so trying to hit Morris on the outside of the winger's hip has generated great

success for the Dragons this year.

But the Eels managed to scramble and rush the Dragons attack on Sunday. Creagh admitted his side of the field felt a bit "cramped.''

"They defended us pretty well,'' Creagh said. "They put a lot more pressure on us than some teams have. They definitely did a good job.''

The Broncos have changed their defensive structure slightly since their round four 25-12 loss against the Dragons.

Both Creagh and Morris each scored a try in that match with Creagh running over Brisbane captain Darren Lockyer through one of Hornby's favourite play the short ball.

Broncos coach Ivan Henjak has shifted backrower Sam Thaiday from the left hand side of the field to the right while Hodges is now joined by Jharal Yow Yeh on the flank.

They can all expect plenty of traffic on Saturday night.

Great assessment. Jharal will have no hope of containing Brett Morris this Friday night. Yow yeh!
