 Dragons look to 2010

Dragons look to 2010

22 Sep, 2009 01:18 PM
ST George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett has retained most of his squad of players for next season, with the Dragons focusing on retention rather than recruitment.

With a large turnover of players in his first full season in control of the club, Bennett has stuck solid with this squad as he hopes to build on this year's achievements, highlighted by the minor premiership.

From Saturday night's 17-man squad only Justin Poore (joining the Eels) will definitely not be at the club next season and the future of Wendell Sailor remains unclear.

Sailor, 35, may have played his last game of rugby league as he contemplates retirement.

The club have secured Ben Creagh, Dean Young, Brett Morris, Beau Scott and Dan Hunt to long-term contracts.

Two new players, Peni Tagive (Wests Tigers) and Michael Greenfield (South Sydney), will join the club next season.

Tagive, 20, is a towering outside back who has played eight first-grade games. He has missed the majority of this season with a shoulder injury.

Greenfield, 24 a former Sharks prop, has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons. After making his NRL debut in 2004 at Cronulla, he has played only 24 matches.

DRAGONS 2010

Gains: Michael Greenfield (South Sydney Rabbitohs one year), Peni Tagive ( two years Wests Tigers)

The Dragons will be back and ready to take it up a notch next year, the Minor Premiership is good, but we want more. Another full year under Bennett will have them winning their 17th premiership.

The arrogance of the dragons board and supporters has been exposed for all to behold forever.

Why is Neville REES like ST GEORGE Illawarra? He has never won the premiership in a big game this century and never likely to do so.

I think Benny needs to have a look at the halfback and fullback. Both did not create enough. The fullback ran hard, but his ability to link with Morris is a serious problem, he did not know how to use the winger. Move hornby back there.

Agree with fedzy. Big problem with the Dragons fullback Darius Boyd. He does not run as a second option ball runner for the play makers like K. Hunt, J. Hayne, B. Slater and even Luke Pattern do.
