Kogarah is winner

08 Sep, 2009 02:46 PM
DRAGONS supporter Dick Caine is hoping to have large TV screens installed in the heart of Kogarah so thousands of St George Illawarra fans can watch the Dragons-Eels semi-final "live'' this Sunday.

Caine said the Dragons' "courageous'' decision not to move the Jubilee Oval, Kogarah, game to the larger Sydney Football Stadium must be supported by Kogarah Council and local businesses.

"Thousands of Dragons supporters will be locked out, so I'm in the process of getting the necessary support to have large TV screens installed at Kogarah Town Square,'' Caine said.

"I've been a critic of Dragons CEO Peter Doust in the past, but he, coach Wayne Bennett and the board are to be congratulated by keeping the semi-final at Kogarah and not bowing to the pressure of monetary gain.

"Now, we need to look after all the fans who can't get tickets, by putting the game on live in the centre of Kogarah, with a free sausage sizzle for anyone wearing red and white.

"I'm confident by the end of the week that we will have the necessary support to have some large TV screens showing the Dragons live at Kogarah.''

The council was examining the proposal after Caine contacted authorities yesterday.

Caine is urging all local businesses to support the idea financially by calling 95464203 or 0418118718.

Peter Doust said yesterday the Dragons' decision to keep their semi at Kogarah was about "showing faith in our supporters''.

"Yes, Wayne's [Bennett] Broncos did lose a semi after agreeing to move a game from Brisbane to Townsville, and that was in the back of our minds,'' Doust said.

"But this decision was more about showing faith in fans, sponsors and corporate partners in the short term for a long-term investment.''
