UNHAPPY with his lack of opportunities on the field and far from settled away from football Daniel Vidot needed a change.
Once touted to have already become a regular in Queensland’s State of Origin side, Vidot has come to St George Illawarra to restore his standing as one of the game’s brightest young outside backs.
Switching between jovial and serious, Vidot provided an interesting insight upon first meeting.
His character ranges from dancing in YouTube clips to asking a teammate to become a ‘‘roomie’’ after just one training session.
Vidot nominated stretching as the biggest change since joining the Dragons on a three-year deal in November.
‘‘In Canberra we were pretty relaxed about stretching,’’ Vidot said.
‘‘It was a relaxed stretch but here it’s really intense.
‘‘Sometimes I don’t look forward to it.
‘‘It’s supposed to be the easiest part of training but it’s been the hardest.
‘‘It takes a lot of energy out of you but I feel pretty good so it must be working.’’
Vidot formed a relationship with Dragons coach Steve Price when Price coached the Samoan national side in 2010.
Despite stepping down from the squad after being told playing would rule him ineligible to represent Australia and Queensland, Price managed to have a lasting effect on the outside back.
‘‘I got along with him and he gets along with the Pacific Islanders,’’ Vidot said.
‘‘He is very cruisy and down to earth.’’
Although having playing 45 top-grade games for the Raiders in three years Vidot was continually overlooked for his favoured centre position.
But his move away from the nation’s capital was much more than football related.
‘‘I had some personal issues that I needed to get away from,’’ Vidot said.
‘‘I wasn’t entirely happy with my position ... I got into a dark patch in Canberra.
‘‘I felt very isolated and felt there was hardly anyone there for me.
‘‘I have family in Sydney and that has really helped.’’
Vidot is living with fellow new recruit Atelea Vea in Wollongong.
The pair had never met before their first training session at the Dragons.
‘‘I met him the first day of training and we kind of got along so I asked if he wanted to move in,’’ Vidot said.
‘‘It’s been good.
‘‘He is the person that does all the cooking and cleaning and I entertain him.’’
Entertainment is all part of Vidot’s make-up.
He has been a YouTube sensation with a dancing video clip.
‘‘There is a bit of a character side to me,’’ Vidot said.
‘‘I used to do a bit of acting and other things that footy players don’t like.
‘‘I like to have a bit of a joke.’’
But when it comes to his on-field goals Vidot does not mince his words.
‘‘I want to get a starting spot,’’ Vidot said.
‘‘That’s why I signed.
‘‘Eventually playing for Queensland is something I really want to do.’’
The Dragons resumed pre-season training last week.
Daniel Vidot will battle with Chase Stanley for the right-side centre position vacated by Mark Gasnier. Vidot will also provide squad depth being able to play on the wing or at fullback.
Who would you like to see fill the vacant centre position?
