CRONULLA Sharks took a gamble and cashed in this week. And not just with Tim Smith, the Sharks' controversial new half-back signing.
The win-less Sharks, a day after their drubbing at the hands of Souths, certainly had reason to smile again the way the dice rolled.
Still counting every penny, their skinny coffers were boosted by almost $500,000 with their sponsorship deal with PokerStars.net.
So the likes of Joe Hachem and Shane Warne could be coming to a Sharks Leagues Club table near you? Well, maybe.
And Tim Smith? The talented ex-Parramatta star says he won't be "gambling'' again with his health, after a well-publicised drinking binge saw him moved out of the Eels' camp, and subsequent news he is a bipolar sufferer.
Smith, the latest contestant to the Sharks' worrying half-back position, where half a dozen have been tried since Brett Kimmorley was shown the door in 2008, renews his partnership of two seasons with fellow Wigan half Trent Barrett.
With Cronulla paying compensation to the Broncos and Brisbane Easts, Smith was released and immediately installed to face his old Parramatta teammates at Toyota Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The tall Smith is 25, looks fit at about 88 kilograms. And he's excited to get a "third chance''.
He talked about his past and future, and revealed he was still taking medication for his disease.
"I'm going to be a dad, and my partner of one year; Renae, is very supportive.
"You need that.
"And I wanted another chance in the NRL, so I'm really happy it is with the Sharks and under another half [Ricky Stuart].'' Smith is looking to a better Sharks, and his reunion with "Bazz'' Barrett.
And Cronulla isn't new to him. When he arrived at the airport, Stuart found Smith carrying his surfboard.
Smith's inclusion means three changes for Cronulla's 5.30pm Saturday home game against the Eels. Injured centre Dean Collis is replaced by Ben Pomeroy, hooker Stuart Flanagan drops off the bench and another former Eel, outside back Taulima Tautai, is 18th man.
