BOOM ST George Illawarra outside back Kyle Stanley will be given first crack at the Dragons vacant No.1 spot.
Coach Steve Price made the announcement as St George Illawarra and South Sydney launched the annual Charity Shield clash at ANZ Stadium yesterday.
Price has resisted shifting Kiwi international Jason Nightingale from wing to fullback as Stanley beat off challenges from Denan Kemp and Daniel Vidot to fill the position vacated by Darius Boyd.
‘‘It’s obviously the biggest challenge of my short career so far and this is my shot to actually cement a spot so I’m going to try my hardest week in week out,’’ Stanley said. ‘‘There’s a lot of things I have to work on but If I’m playing fullback I’ve obviously got to work on my organisational skills, getting plays organised, getting out the back of plays and running the right lines.’’
The Hurstville United junior is expected to start at fullback in the Dragons first trial against Canterbury on February 4 before the Charity Shield match on February 18.
