FOUR years ago Nicola Zagame was sitting in her Kirrawee High School classroom dreaming of winning an Olympic spot.
Now the Cronulla Water Polo Club member is on the verge of living the dream as she inches closer to a place in Australia’s London Olympics team.
Zagame will have a chance to further cement herself in the Australian line-up as international water polo comes to Sutherland this week.
‘‘I was away for a juniors’ trip when the last Olympics were on,’’ Zagame, 21, said.
‘‘I’ve got a DVD of all the games — it’s been a dream of mine for so long and now for it to be almost coming true. It has all gone so quickly.’’
Zagame will be joined by Cronulla teammates Holly Lincoln-Smith and 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Alicia McCormack in the Australian squad.
Sutherland Leisure Centre will host two Test matches against the US this Thursday and Friday.
‘‘When all of us Cronulla girls are in the water at the same time it makes a difference,’’ Zagame said.
‘‘It comes a bit more naturally; you just know where your teammates want the ball, and it’s definitely noticeable especially before we all gel into the team.’’
Australia has had a dream run in the lead-up to the next Olympics.
The Stingers beat China 11-8 to win the Canada Cup in December.
The side also defeated the US 7-4 in the final of the water polo Pan Pacific championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Saturday.
Cronulla player Rebecca Rippon was in Australia’s extended squad for the Pan Pacific games but missed the coming three-match series against the US starting at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre today, before it moves to Sutherland.
‘‘I haven’t played an international game at Sutherland,’’ Zagame said.
‘‘It’s going to be exciting. We have a bit of an advantage playing outdoors, where some people might not be used to that.’’
The Australian team has an intense preparation in the lead-up to the Olympics.
Zagame will enjoy three weeks at home after this Test series but will continue to train before the national league starts on January 26. Changes can still be made to the Australian team before the Olympics in July.
Australia Stingers play the US in three Test matches starting at Sydney Olympic Park today. Australia will then play two games at Sutherland Leisure Centre in Rawson Road, Sutherland, from 7pm on Thursday and Friday. Tickets: $10 at gate.
