It's a quieter day to kick off the week, with a few think-pieces to get your brain juices flowing. Fairytale is one of the films of dissident Chinese auteur Ai Weiwei. In 2007, he flew one thousand Chinese people to Kassel in Germany, the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm. He then filmed their “living fairytales”, and the result is a reflection on East and West, rich and poor. 11:30am, Tribal Theatre 2.
The Field of Magic follows the lives of dump dwellers in Lithuania's Buda Forest, who forage and survive on a landfill site. Four years in the making, it follows the unique rhythm of life for this marginal community. 6:30pm, Petrie Barracks 5.
Django Kill... If You Live, Shoot! is one of the most violent westerns ever made, featuring scenes of torture via vampire bat, and searching for golden bullets in a still-living man's chest. And this screening is the uncensored cut. That's some tasty spaghetti western. 8:30pm, Tribal Theatre 2.
The Rescue 911 series features films rescued from the cinema scrap-heap. Dirty Ho is one such gem, a 1979 Hong Kong martial arts film about Ho, a thief who runs afoul of a disguised “stealth kung-fu” expert. Physical humour as well as lethal roundhouse kicks. 6:30pm, Tribal Theatre 1.
Thy Womb tells the tale of Shaleha, a midwife working in a largely Muslim region of the Philippines. Infertile herself, she selflessly sets out to find a woman willing to bear her husband's child. Lyrical and beautifully acted, it's the work of director Brillante Mendoza, who's out here for the festival. 6:30pm, Petrie Barracks 4.
