Sutherland Shire artist Matt Corby has cemented his position on the Australian music scene after winning song of the year at the 2012 Aria Awards last week for his hit song Brother.
Corby, 22, did not attend the awards on Thursday night at the Sydney Entertainment Centre because of writing and recording commitments overseas.
In a message to his Facebook fans, Corby said: ‘‘a huge thank you to the Australian public for voting for me for song of the year at the Aria’s. I’m lucky to have such incredible fans who have come along for the journey. Sorry we couldn’t be there to celebrate. Much love, from London.’’
The singer-songwriter was also a nominee for breakthrough artist and best male artist.
Since he finished up as the runner-up on Australian Idol in 2007, Corby has been compared to legendary artists including Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley.
Corby’s debut album is due to be released early 2013.
International star and multiple Grammy Award winner, Taylor Swift was a special guest on the night, performing her smash hit Trouble from the album Red.
But the real star was Gotye (Wally De Backer), who scooped up for ARIA Awards including the coveted album of the year for his internationally acclaimed album Making Mirrors.
The Melbourne-based artist also took home the Aria for the publicly voted best Australian live act, best male artist and best pop release - both awards he won last year.
