The NSW Police family were in tears on the beach at Dolls Point on Friday morning as they welcomed St George Superintendent Dave Donohue after an eight-kilometre charity swim.
The police commander swam from La Perouse to Dolls Point to raise money for Emily Newman, 8, whose mother has inoperable ovarian cancer.
Natalie Newman is a former policewoman who works at St George police station in administration.
Even though she was feeling sick from chemotherapy last week, she ran on to the beach to hug her boss on the sand as he stepped out of the water.
It was an eventful journey from La Perouse which included a mid-swim interview with Ray Hadley on 2GB.
Mr Donohue decided to swim to raise money for Emily’s education, after only knowing her mother for a few weeks at his new posting at Kogarah.
About 200 people stood on the beach and were shocked to see him finish in 1 hour and 57 minutes.
At least $64,000 has been raised so far. See more in Tuesday's Leader
