Volunteers' work comes in for praise

HURSTVILLE Council recognised the services of 24 volunteers at its recent International Volunteers' Day civic reception.

Hurstville mayor Jack Jacovou said the volunteers were recognised for their great dedication, service and contribution to Hurstville city.

"Each volunteer was nominated by their peers and not by the council," Cr Jacovou said.

"This is the highest accolade a person can receive; it is something to be proud of."

The volunteers represented just about every sector, from welfare, education and conservation to emergency services, sports and the arts.

"Volunteering has an important place in the fabric of our community; it is the vital thread that draws people together and helps to create social cohesion," Cr Jacovou said.

Each award recipient received a special commemorative certificate.

The International Volunteers' Day reception coincided with International Volunteer Day — a global event that is celebrated annually on December 5.
