A girl, 12, suffered a suspected broken leg but is expected to make a full recovery after she was hit by a car near Menai High School on Monday, police said.
Sutherland police Detective Inspector Terry O’Neill said the girl was hit by a white Toyota Hiace as she crossed Old Illawarra Road about 3.40pm.
Police said they did not believe speed was a factor but had breath-tested the woman, 64, driving the car at the time.
An off-duty nurse and doctor and paramedics called to the scene, helped the girl who was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital in a stable condition.
Several parents have contacted the Leader calling for an extra pedestrian crossing on Old Illawarra Road and more safety measures to slow traffic in the area.
