SUTHERLAND Shire Council plans to name the new Greenhills Beach park in honour of former, long-serving Cook MP Don Dobie.
The proposal, contained in a mayoral minute by mayor Kent Johns, was unopposed at Monday night's council meeting.
Permission will be sought from the Geographic Names Board of NSW to start the formal process.
Liberal councillor Kevin Schreiber, who initiated the move, said it was a fitting way to mark the contribution of the MP who died in 1996.
"Don did so much for the community right across the shire," Cr Schreiber said.
"Someone described him as being larger than life, and he was available to anyone and everyone.
"He did a lot for our surf clubs and I thought his love for the surf lifesaving movement made Greenhills a fitting place to honour him."
The 91-hectare park, which at present is known as Greenhills Parklands, is on the corner of Captain Cook Drive and Lindum Road.
It is due to be handed over to the council next month following its development by Australand and Breen Holdings as part of a deal to have the adjoining land rezoned for housing.
The area includes 10 playing fields, picnic areas and walking paths, with a $1 million skate park to be completed later this year.
