That was the opinion of residents spoken to yesterday regarding the Biological Resources building in Kensington Street, Kogarah.
Biological Resources is the major provider of animals and services for the animal-based research and teaching community at the University of NSW.
It provides researchers at affiliated teaching hospitals with sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and rats and was established in Kogarah in the mid-1980s.
The centre is marked as a "research building" and is next door to the emergency department and Kogarah fire station.
Supporters of Griffith House said the government could have found the room it needed for the new emergency department by demolishing the research building instead.
Heritage supporter Andrew Greifeneder, of Sans Souci, said it was strange that demolition of the research building was not explored as a viable option. This was despite residents being told the research building was earmarked for demolition down the track.
The intercom at the entrance to the centre indicates it is used by cancer researchers and the renal hypertension unit.
Animal-based research is also used by some locum consultants and visiting medical officers as publicised online.
At the time the Leader went to press, comment was still being sought from the University of NSW.
