THERE were plenty of ‘‘thank yous’’ exchanged between patients and staff at St George and Sutherland hospitals on Friday ahead of International Nurses’ and Midwives’ Day on Sunday.
The May 12 event marks the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is considered the founder of modern nursing.
It was celebrated at Sutherland Hospital with speeches, an afternoon tea, demonstrations, stalls and a fashion parade.
St George Hospital nurses and midwives celebrated with a cocktail party and awards ceremony at Botany Bay Seafood Restaurant, Brighton-Le-Sands.
A total of 2674 babies were born at St George Hospital last year. There have been 793 babies born so far this year.
A total of 1289 babies were born at Sutherland Hospital last year, with 419 welcomed so far this year.
