LATEST NEWS:
HOMICIDE detectives are investigating the death of a boy, 7, who reportedly fell off a pogo stick and died at his Oatley home on Tuesday.
Paramedics were called to the Mulga Road home just before 6.30am on Tuesday after reports a boy was unconscious and not breathing.
Ambulance officers pronounced the boy dead at the scene.
Police were told the boy suffered a head injury on Monday and did not wake up on Tuesday.
Hurstville police and homicide detectives are now treating the death as suspicious and are preparing a report for the Coroner.
‘‘As with all unexplained deaths, the boy’s death will be treated as suspicious until determined otherwise,’’ a NSW Police spokesman said.
An autopsy is expected to be held later today.
Media crews rushed to the area near Oatley West shops this morning as police carried out further investigations.
An employee from a business next door to the crime scene said CCTV footage showed a man walking out of the unit block with two green garbage bags ‘‘in a hurry’’ on Monday night.
The NuLife TV Antenna Service employee said police were now reviewing the footage and he believed it was the only business nearby which had cameras.
A crime scene has been set up around the back of a complex of Oatley West shops, where it is believed the boy suffered his fatal injuries inside a unit behind.
Several business owners said police searched inside green wheelie bins on the side of the building in Woronora Parade on Tuesday.
An officer is standing guard outside the front of the Mulga Road building, which had been cordoned off with white and blue tape.
Police refused to let workers enter businesses inside 83 Mulga Road.
One woman who worked at a dental practice in the complex said she and her colleagues were not allowed inside.
"It's extremely frustrating," she said.
It is believed the boy's stepfather worked in a sound recording studio in one of the units.
An employee at the Bottle-O Oatley West said it was well-known there was a recording studio and there were often people buying bottles of bourbon and ‘‘jamming’’ in the block next door.
Hurstville police Chief Superintendent Brad Shepherd said this morning that police were ''to confirm the actual time of the incident and the timeline of events in relation to the boy’s death''.
‘‘We are still in the early stages of our inquiries,'' he said.’’
He said detectives were waiting for the results of an autopsy, which was expected to be carried out this morning.
‘‘We are hoping the post mortem this morning will give us more information about the version of events and the injuries sustained.’’
Police had interviewed the boy’s parents as part of their investigations.
‘‘A little boy was found dead at home, so that’s just normal [to interview the parents],’’ Chief Superintendent Brad Shepherd said.
‘‘We are still looking at forensic evidence and what people have told us to figure out what happened.’
TUESDAY'S STORY:
A boy, 7, has died after he fell off a pogo stick at his Oatley home.
Paramedics were called to the Mulga Road home at 6.12am today after reports of an unconscious boy.
When the paramedics arrived, they pronounced the boy dead.
They said the boy had died after hitting his head on Monday.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and a report is being prepared for the Coroner.
CareFlight’s Ian Badham said it was a terrible tragedy for the boy’s parents.
‘‘If there should ever be an incident where a child has hit their head and if they start to feel drowsy or if a bump starts to appear, we implore parents to call triple-o without hesitation,’’ Mr Badham said.
‘‘Get the paramedics to attend and then they can assess what treatment the child needs.’’
