The big red star atop Westfield Miranda will not be saved.
A Westfield spokeswoman broke the news today after a flurry of appeals from concerned residents on the Leader website and Westfield’s Facebook page.
‘‘The office tower is in the process of being demolished to make way for the expanded centre, including three new levels of basement car parking and the new restaurant precinct,’’ she said.
‘‘The star — which is a customised feature of the office tower — is no longer operational and will be removed as part of that building’s demolition.
‘‘Westfield knows it has been popular with the local community and is working on opportunities to incorporate its symbolism into the new centre.’’

Work on the new-look Westfield Miranda is progressing with the demolition of the tower block underway.
The $435 million development will include more speciality shops, a refurbished Myer department store, a new Woolworths and an Event cinema complex and outdoor dining precinct.
While many residents and shoppers are excited about the development, some have raised concerns about what will happen to the ‘‘Westfield star’’.
Reader Kaitlyn Bateup said the star ''from the old clay pit, to Miranda Fair and now Westfield...has been around for 49 years making it a local landmark in the shire’’.
‘‘This remarkable red star is seen from all angles of the shire and it is a shame to see it go. Ever since I was a kid I could always see the star slowly spin from my bedroom window... I’m sure a lot of the community agree that this star needs to be saved.’’
