NEW research from the ABS has found tertiary-educated professionals who live in capital cities are the most likely to experience personal fraud including credit card fraud, identity theft, and selected scams.
Working Australians were twice as likely to be victims of credit card fraud or a scam as unemployed citizens.
Results were compiled using data from the 2010-11 Personal Fraud Survey, where Australians aged 15 years and over were asked about their experiences of fraud and scams in the 12 months leading up to the interview.
Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said people could minimise their risk by locking letterboxes to stop the theft of mail that contained personal details.
And since half of all victims had their identity stolen over the internet, extra precautions needed to be taken online. That included limiting the amount of personal information on social media.
