IT has taken more than a year, but Turrella residents will finally get a new bridge between the train station and Turrella reserve.
The previous bridge was boarded up by Canterbury Council after high water levels damaged it in June last year.
Since then residents have been building their own makeshift bridges, or simply jumping across Wolli Creek to access the station.
One unhappy resident even wrote on the boarded-up bridge imploring Rockdale and Canterbury councils to get their act together and build a new one.
This month the two councils, who share responsibility for the bridge, finally gave residents the news they had been waiting for, announcing work was under way on a new $600,000 "state-of-the-art" bridge.
Major work on stabilising the creek bank has been completed, and the bridge will be in place by the end of September, according to a statement by Rockdale Council.
The new steel bridge will be three metres wide, allowing for bike access to the station, and links to the Cooks River Cycleway.
Canterbury and Rockdale councils both contributed $300,000 to cover the cost of the bridge.
