Two people have escaped serious injury after a car caught fire on the Captain Cook Bridge at Taren Point on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the scene about 1.35pm after reports of a truck and car accident.
Inspector Steven Egbers, from Miranda police, said the Mitsubishi Magna had broken down in one of the lanes when the truck smashed into the rear of the sedan.
‘‘It has caused considerable damage to the rear of the car, pushed it a fair way up the road and caused it to catch on fire,’’ he said.
‘‘The truck went through a safety barrier and ended up on the other side of the road.’’
Fire and Rescue NSW crews extinguished the fire and paramedics treated two males, aged 17 and 24, at the scene.
They were taken to St George Hospital in a stable condition.
It is not known if they were both in the sedan at the time it was hit.
Traffic is still being affected and two of three lanes are closed in each direction.
Buses travelling on Taren Point Road are delayed up to 15 minutes and motorists are advised to use the Princes Highway.
