One is a bankrupt embalmer turned property developer. The other is a political chameleon, a former Labor mayor now Liberal Party powerbroker.
Together, Matt Daniel and Kent Johns have become a force in the Liberal Party's heartland of the Sutherland Shire. They have recruited heavily and raised thousands of dollars from the community and big business - much of it from property developers.
So influential are the pair that new Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has had to appeal to them to ensure his survival. Not only did Daniel orchestrate the Liberal ticket for last year's council election, but he also sat on the panel of party executives which endorsed their preselection.
