A PROBLEMATIC intersection at Mortdale has created a divide among residents.
This follows Hurstville Council’s initial proposal in April to install a roundabout on Roberts Avenue, either at the corner of Beatty Street or Bowman Street.
The proposal was put forward amid safety concerns raised by some residents.
However it was rejected by the council’s traffic advisory committee last month.
The committee found neither location met the requirements of the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).
Instead, they suggested moving an existing No Stopping sign on the southern side of Roberts Avenue a further 10 metres east of Beatty Street.
But the council refused to adopt the committee’s recommendations.
Philip Sansom and Con Hindi moved last month that the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of either location be considered.
Colin Buchanan said he had never witnessed an accident in the 45 years he had lived on the corner of Roberts Avenue and Beatty Street.
He said there was no need for either traffic lights or a roundabout as both were costly.
‘‘Moving the No Stopping sign would be more cost effective plus it would greatly enhance and improve the safety factor for turning cars,’’ he said.
But Karen Young, a resident of Bannerman Street, Mortdale Heights, for 17 years said a roundabout would ease access to and from the Mortdale Heights area.
‘‘Trying to exit the Mortdale Heights area onto Roberts Avenue can be time consuming and, at times, quite dangerous,’’ she said.
‘‘Traffic flow has increased on Roberts Avenue over the 17 years I have lived here and it is generally expected that traffic will significantly increase once Woolworths opens.
‘‘So whether it be a roundabout or traffic lights at Beatty Street or any of the other exit streets ... I believe something needs to be done before there is a serious accident.’’
A motion to defer the matter was carried unanimously.
