The owners of a popular café at Bundeena are giving a heartfelt ‘‘thank you’’ to the volunteer firefighters from the village.
Café Cookie, run by Angela Mark and Magda Srom, are serving free bacon and egg rolls, and tea and coffee, to volunteers until the emergency is over.
“Just turn up in your gear and we'll do the rest,” says the entry on the café’s Facebook page. “We admire all of you for putting your lives at risk and this is the least we can do.”
Ms Srom said it was just a small way of showing how much members of Bundeena Rural Fire Brigade were appreciated.
“We wanted to help somehow and the only way we can help is trying to feed the people who are donating their time,” she said.
“What they are doing is huge. At the moment the Royal National Park is not burning but if it comes to it, it would be a massive deal for the village because we all could go up in smoke.”
The brigade has supplied crews to tackle blazes in the Southern Highlands since late last week and used Tuesday to get ready to return to the fires.
Deputy captain Dave Inskip said the crew was now well rested and ready to head out as wherever it was needed.
*Peakhurst Inn and Como hotels are collecting funds for the Salvation Army appeal and offering any firefighters or volunteers a free meal and beer.
