Conditions on the Cronulla (Whale bay) beaches were quite eerie this morning as a 2ft E/N went about its usual business. Hopefully things don’t get out of hand later with big offshores predicted.
Surfing at the moment is quite tide dependant with the beach level relatively flat, and with last week’s full moon there was a lot of difference in the water levels. High is about 12 noon and low around 6am/pm.
There is some promise in the banks; I guess it will depend on the next few days as to what becomes of them, but surfers should look and wait a bit longer. The Swellnet report said it was 1ft this morning but if they waited a few minutes longer it was obviously a bit bigger than that.
Speaking of Swellnet, they have a brand new website that probably provides more information than the old one - I just don’t know if old guys like me can follow it. http://www.swellnet.com/
But I will persevere! There are some good features that I didn’t notice before with surf forecasts and reports from all over the world. I saw the Nth shore of Kauai was 6ft plus yesterday and I even checked conditions in Sicily! Excellent , more time to waste at work.
Back to the forecast though, this small East swell will drop tomorrow before a new 3ft South swell is due on Friday with Nor West winds. The pick of the week shows up as Sunday with a 4ft waves predicted but surf early as winds will be blowing from the hard North, Northeast.
In more irrelevant overseas news; the world’s best under-21 talent is set to descend upon Joaquina Beach in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil to do battle at the HD World Junior Championships presented by Devassa. The premier list of surfers hailing from seven different regions will be vying for the undisputed ASP World Junior Championship title from October 29 through November 5, 2013.
The ASP World Junior Championships has spawned some of surfing’s brightest talent, with former event winners including the likes of reigning ASP World Champion Joel Parkinson (AUS), 32, Adriano de Souza (BRA), 26, Andy Irons (HAW), Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 22, and Laura Enever (AUS), 21.
Taylor Jensen (USA) won his historic second ASP World Longboard Title on the sand at Riyue Bay in Wanning, Hainan Island, China, last November. The ASP is pleased to announce that the Riyue Bay ASP World Longboard Championships hosted by Wanning will once again see 36 of the world's best longboarders compete for the sport's biggest prize in China from November 25 - 29.
Speaking of China, and wait till you read this, “One of the most hotly-anticipated events on the entire pro surfing calendar” was launched today, October 17, at The Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, China, in the presence of Susan Chen, President of Swatch Group China & General Manager of The Swatch Art Peace Hotel, Mayor Zhang of Wanning, ASP Australasia General Manager Dane Jordan, and actor Sunny Wang- I think that may have been a little exaggerated!
Kai Otten (AUS), 33, has just won the Rip Curl Pro Portugal presented by Moche in a hard-fought final over rookie Nat Young (USA), 22, in three-to-five foot (1 – 1.5 metre) waves at the primary venue of Supertubos.
Stop No. 9 of 10 on the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the Rip Curl Pro Portugal presented by Moche completed five rounds of action packed competition today, sending the 2013 ASP World Title Race to Hawaii before crowning Otton as event winner.
Nat Young (USA), 22, with his result in the Rip Curl Pro Portugal pres. by Moche, has claimed the 2013 ASP WCT Rookie of the Year title.
Young, who amazingly is the first Northern California surfer to qualify for the elite ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) since Adam Replogle in 1998 enjoys a huge hometown support-and has got a really cool name!.
Entering the final stop on the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour, Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater (USA), 41, remain in contention for the ASP World Title. Following Fanning’s fifth place at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, Slater must win the Pipe Masters to surpass Fanning for the ASP World Title. If Slater is to win the event, Fanning must place 3rd or better to claim the title for himself.
In more disturbing news for Australians, Brazil will go down in the history books as the Gold Medal Team of the 2013 ISA World Bodyboard Championship.
The individual division winners are: Eder Luciano from Brazil in Open Men's, Neymara Carvalho from Brazil in Open Women's, Jefferson Bustos from Costa Rica in Junior Boys Under-18, Glorielys Oropeza from Venezuela in Junior Girls Under-18 and Luis Rodriguez from Venezuela in Dropknee. Team Venezuela wins The ISA Aloha Cup.
Come on Aussies lift your game, and just wait for Fanning to win Pipe!
Till next week, and don’t burn.
