The thunderstorm is likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the area.
The State Emergency Service (SES) is urging people to keep clear of creeks and storm drains and not to walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
Sydney Airport has received 5.2mm of rain since 9am this morning.
A mild temperature of 23 degrees is expected for the city today.
