The first stage of rebuilding St George Hospital would be ''first on the list'' of projects in the local health district once planning was completed, a community forum was told Monday night.
Michael Still, the chairman of the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, gave the assurance.
About 250 people attended the forum at Kogarah.
Mr Still said planning would be completed by the end of next year and a submission for funding would then be put to Treasury.
He said the first stage costing $300 million would involve additional floors being built on top of the new emergency department.
Several speakers told the meeting of relatives having their lives saved and receiving ''' wonderful treatment'' from staff working in dilapidated buildings.
