Anthony Mundine is yet to be interviewed by police about the suspected arson attack that destroyed his Boxa Bar café at Hurstville on Thursday morning.
A shocked Mundine believes his MacMahon Street cafe was fire-bombed.
‘‘I only just heard about it,’’ Mundine said this morning, who is preparing for his fight with American Shane Mosley on November 27 after it was cancelled a fortnight ago because of a contractual dispute.
‘‘This is bad ... real bad. Apparently, it was fire-bombed.
‘‘But I believe in karma and that good things come to good people and not to bad people.’’
Mundine does not run the cafe, which was adorned with boxing pictures and memorabilia.
Fire and Rescue NSW were called about 3.15am to the former Hurstville police station building.
It took three fire crews to put out the fire but the Boxa Bar, on the ground floor, was destroyed.
A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers.
Fire investigators are treating the blaze as suspicious.
Detective Inspector Paul Simpkins, of St George police, said two persons were seen running north along MacMahon Street.
‘‘There is no firm description at this stage,’’ he said.
‘‘Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding it and the identity of those two persons.’’
Mr Simpkins said the fire had caused ‘‘significant damage’’ believed to be in excess of $500,000.
‘‘No motive has been established.
‘‘Police are aware that Mr Mundine has a financial interest in the premises. He will be spoken to during the investigation.’’
Police will prepare a report for the State Coroner because of the level of damage sustained to the building.
