THE Dragons Return To Kogarah group (R2K) has led some angry reaction from St George Illawarra fans to the club’s decision to move four games from Kogarah and Wollongong from the 2014 season onwards.
Sydney and Wollongong-based fans flooded websites and social media expressing their anger and disappointment, with the possibility that Kogarah Jubilee Oval may host as few as three home games in 2014 or a quarter of the season’s home games.
The Dragons announced on Monday afternoon that it had committed to a “right game, right venue” strategy aimed at increasing their fan and corporate membership, and playing four of their 12 home games at ANZ Stadium, Allianz Stadium and SCG.
Kogarah Jubilee Oval and Wollongong will retain only eight home games a season but the club is yet to announce if it will be an even allocation between each venue.
‘‘Since their return to Kogarah in 2003, the Dragons have been based at a venue that has acquired more than $37 million of [federal and state] government and community funding,’’ said R2K chairman Lachlan McLean.
‘‘During this time, Kogarah Jubilee has become the paramount boutique facility in NSW, hosting the Socceroos, the Kangaroos, Manchester United, Sydney FC and St George Soccer.
‘‘Kogarah clearly deserves a better outcome than what was announced by Peter Doust and Michael McDonald.’’
