WHEN Yianni Mavromoustakos gets his chance to share his opinions in front of the state's leaders, he hopes his words will make a difference.
The 2013 graduate from Gymea Technology High School was chosen to be part of the 2014 YMCA NSW Youth Parliament.
The popular program attracted more than 300 applications.
YMCA NSW brings together students who represent their "electorates" from across the state.
It gives young people the chance to compose a bill in the legislative assembly on a topic they are passionate about.
Teams work together to develop legislation that aims to overcome issues they face in their communities.
In July Yianni, 18, who will represent the Miranda electorate, will attend a week-long residential camp where he will have the opportunity to expand his leadership skills.
He starts a degree in commerce at the University of NSW this year.
"Youth Parliament gives me the opportunity to prove that no matter how young we are, we can make a positive change in our society," he said.
"Last year I was elected youth member of Miranda, and discussed issues within Family and Community Services I was passionate about, such as the male victims of domestic violence.
"This year I am a part of the committee investigating education infrastructure and resource planning, ensuring that all realms of education are planned to the best of their ability so students learn in the most comforting environment."
