Sonya Austen of Miranda is yet another person expressing her concern about abandoned trolleys in Sutherland Shire (Your View, February 18).
Trolleys are abandoned because of:
■ A few inconsiderate shoppers;
■ Irresponsible retailers; and
■ Inaction by the council.
I have expressed my concern on this problem in your columns and I have emailed Woolworths corporate office without response.
On January 31, I had a meeting with mayor Steve Simpson and David Ackroyd, who, I understand, is responsible for community liaison.
I am pleased to say the mayor acknowledged the problem and agreed the council would take the following actions:
■ Contact the major retailers to request them to introduce a token/coin system like the one used by Aldi at Menai;
■ Seek legal advice about the impounding of abandoned trolleys;
■ Make a trolley control system a condition of future development approval for retailers and wholesalers.
I obtained positive and encouraging responses on the other matters that I raised, such as litter, removal of trees that are safety risks and consumption of alcohol in parks.
