FRIDAY, February 28, marked a turning point for the new Shearwater Landing residential estate at Greenhills Beach.
The new housing estate will have 160 sites, including 27 with panoramic ocean views and priced at more than $1.5 million.
The soil-turning ceremony on Friday formally began the construction, hosted by executive chairman of Breen Property Tom Breen, at the project site.
He said Friday was a historic day for the company, his family and Sutherland Shire.
"This is a momentous occasion," he said.
"This site has been in the ownership of the Breen family for over 60 years.
"It's been a rocky road but we got there ... and I am thrilled to be in this position."
He said the development would be a great benefit for the shire.
Mayor Steve Simpson said it was always good to see a new community beginning to evolve.
But councillor Simpson also commended Mr Breen for being able to fulfil his vision for the shire.
Savills Projects director Nigel Napoli said more than 400 people had registered their interest, which had "surpassed all expectations".
"Families, downsizers and young couples are seeking land quality and location, and Shearwater Landing offers it all," he said.
The development is expected to be completed in 2016; the site is the only beachside suburb to be created in Sydney in more than 30 years.
