THE long-awaited revamp of Bexley Swimming and Leisure Centre has moved another step forward after a development application was lodged.
The Rockdale Council project, which will cost about $30 million, is being assessed by the Joint Regional Planning Panel.
Bexley Swimming and Leisure Centre is scheduled to close on April 30, when its management contract with YMCA comes to an end.
Construction on the new Rockdale City Aquatic Centre will begin in September.
The area will be left without a leisure centre during construction.
The new centre is expected to be completed by May 2016.
Mayor Shane O’Brien said the old pool had reached the end of its life with water leakage, broken heat pumps and unstable tiling.
‘‘I acknowledge that the construction will cause some short-term discomfort but the benefits provided by Rockdale City Aquatic Centre will be significant,’’ he said.
‘‘It will provide a better recreation facility for the enjoyment of the whole community.’’
Applications are open for public comment until 4.30pm on Thursday, March 13. Details: http://haveyoursayrockdale.com.au/bexley-pool
